Mugo pines (Pinus mugo) are notorius for being unbehaved. Throughout the United State's landscaping history, mugo pines sold as dwarf varieties have been reaching 15 to 20 feet tall to the dismay of home owners. Technically these brutes ARE dwarfed by their 80 foot tall parents, but are simply not appropriate for most home landscapes. Mugos have been hard to propagate vegetatively so they are most often produced from seeds. Unfortunately, seedlings all have unique characteristics and their behavior cannot be reliably predicted. Luckily for us home owners, commercial nurseries have been working hard to isolate true dwarf varieties that can be vegetatively propagated so the home owner can reliably count on the purchased plant to stay small and also look the same if more than one are purchased. Iseli Nursery in Oregon is in the forefront of conifer production and has put together a nice selection of truly dwarfed mugo pines for us to choose from. This line of dwarf mugos has been trademarked as the TRU-dwarf® mugos. Unfortunately, Iseli is a wholesale nursery and does NOT sell to the general public. If your local nursery carries specialty, specimen, sculptured, and/or uniquely shaped evergreens there is a good chance they are selling Iseli product. Dig around and you may find some of the TRU-dwarf® mugos in your area. The Koi Garden Club carries some of the TRU-dwarf® mugos, check our current listings. Here is the 2005 offering of Iseli TRU-dwarf® mugos, with a description of their TRU-dwarf® program as described in their wholesale catalog.
